Cochrane – The Western town of Cochrane is just 40 minutes away. Every Saturday morning from May to September you will find a wonderful Farmer’s Market located at the bottom of the hill as you enter the town from Hwy#22. It also has a movie theatre, a recreation centre, and plenty of shopping opportunities! If you’re a quilter, be sure to check out “Addies”, the local quilt store. No trip to Cochrane would be complete without a visit to McKay’s Ice Cream Shoppe located on Main Street.
Calgary – Home to the famous Calgary Stampede, which runs each July, Calgary is just an hour away. Offering everything a big city could, explore the shopping, theatres, dining, and numerous nature trails during your visit. With culture and excitement, Calgary is a don’t miss destination.
Banff – The famous mountain town of Banff is a full day trip, located 90 minutes Southwest of us. This very popular tourist destination has a quaint downtown district filled with shopping and dining opportunities. Visit the Hot Springs, or take the Gondola to the top of the magestic mountains. Also a great area to enjoy some world class skiing.
Royal Tyrrell Museum – 90 minutes Southeast in the Badlands of Alberta, is the Royal Tyrrell Museum, home to thousands of dinosaur fossils and skeletons. Even a drive through the Badlands, and a visit to Horseshoe Canyon is impressive with its unique geographical scenery. You can almost envision the dinosaurs living here amongst the hoodoos as you drive through what seems like an era of time over a million years ago.
Nature Trails – Just outside our doors, allow us to direct you to our nature trails. Enjoy snowshoeing, nature walks, hiking, and bird watching. We are currently creating additional walking trails for you so you can enjoy the numerous wildflowers that grace our forests. So far we’ve recorded over 35 different ones and still discovering more! Enjoy the natural beauty of calypso orchids, wood lilies, Indian paint brush, hairbells, pussytoes, and wintergreen just to name a few. My favorite wildflower discovery has to be the coral root orchid with its unique pink asparagus-like stem that shoots out of the ground with tiny orchids branching outward up the stem. One of Nature’s amazing masterpieces! Request a picnic to enjoy out in nature, by the lake, or in the woods. Don’t forget your camera!
Garden Tours – We love to garden, and enhance our natural surroundings by planting more of nature’s beauty. We would love to introduce you to our gardens. In 2012 we planted 115 perennials and shrubs. Many hours of research was done to find just the right perennials that would attract butterflies – the challenges were finding ones that would grow at our high altitude, as well as ones the deer wouldn’t eat! My favorite to date is the Masterwort, with it’s beautiful minute intricate petals that to me resemble bursting fireworks – be sure to check them out while you’re here and you’ll see why! Please visit Our Gardens for our story and photos.
Bird Watching – One of our favourite things to do while enjoying our morning coffee, or evening cocktails, is follow the adventures of our resident birds. Some of our favourites include the great grey owls, blue jays, grosbeaks and of course, the loons! On our photo drives around the area, we often see Mountain Blue Birds and Horned Owls too!
Outdoor Fire Pit – Let us build you a cozy fire to curl up by while you enjoy the sounds of nature under the stars, or even read a book on a cool evening. Plenty of seating for everyone!
Activities – Have some fun, get some fresh air and exercise, or even do some team building while enjoying activities such as boccce ball, ladder ball, croquet and more.
